The problem
Attendance is often a paper sheet passed around the hall, quizzes and sheets are collected by hand, and coursework grades live in a professor's private spreadsheet. It is slow, easy to game, and students rarely see how their grade was calculated. Classawy gives professors, teaching assistants and students one app for the whole term.
What it does
- One-tap check-in: the professor sets a radius and a time window, and sees a live counter of who checked in, who is pending and who was rejected.
- Server-side anti-fraud: distance, timing, mock-location detection and one device per account.
- In-lecture quizzes for attending students only, with auto-submit and a flag when a student leaves the app.
- Sheets handed in by photo or on paper, with fast swipe-through grading.
- Absence excuses with attachments and a clear decision trail.
- Coursework formula builder (best-N, averages, attendance %), with grades explained step by step.
- Teaching assistants work only on their assigned groups, with tasks from the professor.
- Excel roster import that links each student to their course and group automatically.
- 38 reports and Excel export for the exam office.
Under the hood
01
Edge-first backend
The API runs on Cloudflare Workers with Hono, D1 (SQLite) for data, R2 for files with a per-tenant quota, and KV for media. It costs nothing to start and scales with usage.
02
Location without tracking
Location is measured only at the moment of check-in, and coordinates are never stored. Fraud checks run on the server, not in the app.
03
Roles per course, not per account
The same person can be a TA in one course and a postgraduate student in another, so permissions are resolved per course.
04
Three environments from day one
Dev, test and production, each with seed and dry-run scripts and a QA scenario matrix, plus dedicated store-review accounts.
